Reclusive For fifteen years, Toby has housed a group of outcasts at his sprawling home. This is the tale of him gently nudging them forward because he now needs to move on and they need to as well. This novel is filled with the warmth, charm, and vivid imagery that Lisa Jewell is known for. It’s amusing, heartfelt, and accurate.
Each of Lisa Jewell’s books is so unique and keeps you wanting to read more. Because it is about simplicity and truth, I liked this book and Lisa Jewell’s writing. Her characters are delightful to follow and their differences make them so engaging. It definitely makes me the happiest to be in their good company and imagine the characters to be actual individuals. They are all incredibly credible.
One of my favourite modern authors is Lisa Jewell. I’ve read a good number of her books and am currently reading the rest. If her books are considered “chick lit,” then they are definitely better chick lit. She has a knack for writing well and always has a captivating tale to share. Her character growth has been very strong. This book features a wide variety of characters, many of them are so vivid and true to life that they practically leap off the page.
The book’s title implies that it is about the home at 31 Dream Street in Finchley, London. Toby, a would-be poet, owns a sprawling, architecturally distinctive Victorian home. In 1990, Toby’s father gave him the house. It served as both a wedding gift and an early inheritance. In actuality, the wedding never took place, and Toby’s father and his second bride vanished off to South Africa and were never seen again. Poet Toby, who lives in poverty, must rent out his spare rooms in order to pay his bills. Toby, who is not a businessman, has the quaint idea of renting out the rooms to artists and performers.
As a result, the house has gradually become shabbier and more run down over the years as a succession of waifs and stray animals come and leave. About 15 years after Toby bought the house, the book starts. He is still indigent and his poems have never been published. He is a lonely and miserable individual who avoids his house’s occupants as much as he can because he dislikes most of them. Ruby, a singer who was his first tenant and has since resided there, is the love of his life. Ruby abuses his love for her and his unrequited love for her. Leah resides across the street from Toby’s home.
Leah has never talked to Toby or any of the other renters, but she is curious about their living arrangements as she observes them come and go. A sudden incident brings Toby and Leah together for the first time. As a result of this incident, Toby receives a sizable sum of money. Now that Toby is at a turning point in his life, there is a chance that things will change dramatically for the better. As we follow Toby through these significant life events, this is the central theme of the book. I heartily suggest this work since it is so much fun to read.
