A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

Feyre, a huntress who is 19 years old, kills a wolf in the woods, and a horrific creature shows up to exact vengeance. Feyre learns that her captor is not actually a beast but rather one of the deadly, immortal faeries who once ruled her planet after being dragged to a perilous magical country she only knows about from legends. He’s not always a beast, at least.

Her feelings for the faerie, Tamlin, change from frigid hatred to a blazing passion as she becomes used to her new home, burning through every lie she has been told about the lovely, perilous realm of the Fae. However, there is a problem in the fairylands. Feyre needs to discover a means to stop the ancient, evil shadow from developing so that Tamlin and his world won’t perish forever. A sensuous, breath-taking tale that combines romance, adventure, and faerie mythology into a memorable read is the latest release from blockbuster author Sarah J. Maas.

Throughout the series, this multifaceted character goes through a number of transformations. She has both highs and lows in this novel. She starts out as a seasoned, street-smart, and capable woman with a jaded outlook on love and happiness as well as blatant prejudice and contempt for the fae. She also feels affection for a family that appears to detest and ignore her. She lacks a lot of charm. But does that render a book unworthy? No. However, it is less common to write an h this way because readers generally prefer to relate to us, especially when they are written in the first person. Because so many readers despise Feyre, they might find it difficult to get into the novel.

Feyre changes when the distant take away her burdens, which primarily shaped who she was. She lacks an overarching goal that would motivate her and mould her. While she struggles to make sense of her situation, the book’s speed slips a little. She attempts to use love and art for her new goals, but despite her determination, it doesn’t work out. Is the book any worse as a result? No. Although many readers won’t enjoy reading about a “lesser” h, this downward arc was important to fuel the inevitable turn toward a more appropriate goal. Although it takes a little while, it helps the eventual reversal feel more authentic and right.

Did she enter a hasty agreement with Tamlin? Although her emotions seem a little hurried, they eventually fit her nature because she has always been all in. The character is constant in that regard. Her reticence to express her affection also led me to believe that, in her heart, she might have mistaken it for gratitude. In many ways, Tamlin saved her. I liked Feyre for all of these reasons.
