A Golden Cornish Summer by Phillipa Ashley depicts Emma and Luke’s somewhat serious relationship. In their senior year of high school, Emma and Luke were in love. However, their relationship ended because of encounters with their families. Luke had enlisted in the navy while Emma had attended college. Emma was now spending the summer in Falford, Cornwall, where she was visiting her friend Maxi and her family. Several years before moving back, Luke had already bought Emma’s house. She was upset to hear that, but she subsequently realized that if a developer hadn’t intervened, it would have been converted into flats, and she would not have been able to handle it.
She was a commercial artist who illustrated books, greeting cards, and other items. She sublet her Oxford apartment for the summer so that she could travel to Cornwall and immerse herself in ideas for the book she was writing. Despite the fact that she had so many things to do, Luke still made her breathless. She joined the beach cleanup group known as Beachcombers. Ursula, who had been her high school art instructor and with whom she had a tumultuous relationship, was one of the beachgoers. They grew close and realized they shared similar values.
Emma felt at home in Cornwall and contemplated staying, but things were so challenging because of her relationship with Luke, which was at best tumultuous. She was a talented artist who blended in well with the neighbourhood. There, she felt better and was getting over the loss of her father. Luke liked his life and was a co-owner of a dive shop. He was thoughtful, quick, and clever. He had always loved Emma, but there were just too many issues. Everything was too difficult. Then his father arrived, embarrassed himself, and injured Luke once again. As is frequently the case, their relationship—or lack thereof—was suffering from a lack of communication. Maxi continued to press, as did Ursula.
For the first time in fifteen years, Emma is back in Silver Cove. She fled after splitting from her first love, Luke, yet one of the first individuals she encounters is none other than Luke. Emma still finds herself drawn to him, but can they overcome their shared history of secrets, deception, and parental rivalry? As always, Ms. Ashley’s stories are compelling; she never lets us down.
