A Place of Execution by Val McDermid

Winter 1963: Myra Hindley and Ian Brady start their homicidal careers when two youngsters go missing from Manchester’s streets. The thirteen-year-old Alison Carter disappears from her town, a reclusive society that mistrusts the outside world, on a chilly day in December. For young George Bennett, a newly promoted inspector, it marks the start of his most challenging and harrowing case: a murder without a body, an investigation filled with more dead ends and closed faces than he would have discovered in the anonymity of the inner city, and an outcome that has repercussions for years to come.
