Courttia Newland’s outstanding book “A River Called Time” was written over many years and is full of deep philosophical and spiritual concepts. Courttia Newland imagines a future without colonization or the trafficking in slaves from Africa. Alternatively, imagine a world where European explorers learned from peaceful interactions, leading to the emergence of African cosmology as the main global religion.
It begins with an alternate history, telling us that The Ark was constructed in Dinium (London) in 1830 to save the lives of countless people. However, it soon turned into a haven for the wealthy, who were cut off from the rest of the world. Now, entry is limited to a chosen few.
Markriss Denny, who is ultimately one of those selected to enter the Ark, is first introduced in the novel’s opening scene in 2000. Once inside, he realizes that the Ark is a seriously damaged society and, like others before him who were forced to live under repressive governments, he is faced with difficult decisions. He also possesses a closely-kept secret: his spirit suddenly departs from his body. He may explore a realm beyond the physical and become aware of many different realities because of his capacity for astral projects.
This succinct summary hardly touches the surface of this intricate book. The idea of a society without historical slavery and colonialism, as well as the inclusion of Kemetic religion and mythology, which includes the gods of ancient Egypt, as a natural part of daily life, were ideas I found appealing.
Courttia Newland provides sources for both of these features of astral projection in his Afterword. I may be in a different position than readers who may read this book without having any prior knowledge of numerous esoteric practices because of my personal experiences with them.
