A Study in Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had no idea that Mr. Sherlock Holmes would go on to become the most well-known detective of mysteries when he penned this story in 1886. The first of these tales introduces us to Dr. John Watson and explains his reasons for returning to England after the war. Watson initially perceives Mr. Holmes as being flighty while he works in his laboratory doing experiments, but as we all know, appearances can be misleading. He quickly learns what Holmes does for a career and urges him to take a case when Scotland Yard investigators ask him to get involved.

That novel is a great place to start if you’ve never read any Sherlock Holmes because it presents this fairly enigmatic and passionate figure. At first, Doctor Watson tries to figure out what his peculiar roommate at 221b Baker Street does for a living. He lists the topics that Holmes appears to be very knowledgeable about and the topics that he appears to know nothing about, including the Copernican theory. This is, in essence, the beginning of a friendship and partnership that will be explored in 56 short stories and four books. I believe it is important for everyone to understand how that relationship began.

Dr. John Watson has no idea that he is about to enter a murky world of crime and violence when he rents an apartment on Baker Street with amateur sleuth Sherlock Holmes. Watson is shocked to discover a dead guy with a horrified expression when they accompany Holmes to a foreboding residence in south London. Even though the body is unmarked by signs of violence, a single word is inscribed in blood on the wall. Although Dr. Watson and the police are perplexed, Holmes’s great analytical abilities soon reveal a path of murder, retaliation, and unrequited love.

Dr. Watson gets to see Mr. Sherlock Holmes at his best and how he approaches unravelling clues in the murder room. Even though Holmes putting his face to the floor, picking up dust, and moving back and forth across the room is certainly weird, he is curious and wants to learn more. In this scene, Holmes provides Scotland Yard investigators Gregson and Lestrade with their leads while observing their failure to solve the crime. He, however, is more cunning than that (as we know) and he manages to identify the murderer as well as ascertain his identity and possible whereabouts.

The motive behind the murder is revealed to us after the capture, and it is a very sad and heartbreaking tale of retribution that has caused decades of suffering. Watson is given an explanation by Holmes after the individual is sent to Scotland Yard (no spoilers here; we already know he will be apprehended and brought to the Yard). It is a masterwork that was created many years ago and has withstood the test of time. The real reasons to read the book are how Holmes’ mind works, how he solves problems using only reason and logic and no emotions at all, and how he is content with himself at the end.
