Acme Novelty Library 13 by Chris Ware

A brief narrative is presented about Jimmy Corrigan Sr. visiting the World Fair. Jimmy is the protagonist. Ware is a big fan of the way that words and pictures interact. He uses thought bubbles, speech, narration, and other forms of storytelling, and he is particularly curious about how these two techniques combine. And he is quite interested in how the space is divided on the page. That divide is made simpler by the drawing’s flatness, and the artist masterfully creates an atmosphere with colour.

They’ve done some intriguing things with Garfield, such as removing everything he says and having his owner, Jon, speak to him as though he were a real cat and that Jon was mad. And then Garfield was simply eliminated by someone. Garfield is so formal and straightforward that you can do a lot of that deconstructive stuff with it. The cartoon feels so melancholy without Garfield’s commentary!
