Jake begins to believe that something other than the neighbourhood foxes is responsible for her sheep’s grisly murders as they start happening. Are they local kids? Has someone from Jake’s past come looking for her? Or maybe it’s the enigmatic creature that is said to stalk the neighbourhood at night.
Jake’s present-day life and her prior story, which is skillfully portrayed in reverse chronological order to progressively reveal realities about her past, are two distinct narratives that take place throughout the book.
