An Orchestra of Minorities by Chigozie Obioma

An Orchestra of Minorities is a film about a young chicken farmer named Chinonso who witnesses a woman attempting to leap from a bridge on the outskirts of Umuahia, Nigeria. The film is narrated by a chi or guardian spirit. Chinonso follows her by the roadside and, disgusted by her carelessness, throws two of his treasured hens into the lake below to illustrate the consequences of such a fall. Ndali, the woman, is halted in her tracks.

Chinonso and Ndali become close after this night on the bridge, which bonds them. Ndali, who comes from a rich family, finds it difficult to picture a life near a chicken coop. Chinonso sells most of his things to attend a college in Cyprus after his family objections to the relationship since he lacks education. But when he gets there, he finds that the school is full and that the young Nigerian who had arranged everything had completely misled him. Chinonso is further and further away from his dream, from Ndali, and the land he once called home. He is penniless, homeless, and enraged at a world that keeps pushing him to the margins.

The novel is a modern take on Homer’s Odyssey, spanning countries, across the globe and into cosmic space, and being told by a narrator who has been alive for hundreds of years. Chigozie Obioma crafts a heartbreaking epic about fate and willpower in the mythic manner of the Igbo literary tradition.

A spirit guide tells this love story in an intriguing departure from traditional narrative. His chi teaches us about the protagonist’s inner hardships as a Nigerian chicken farmer. The chi not only describes Chinonso’s day-to-day activities but also enlightens and hypnotizes us with timeless knowledge. Igbo cosmology-based proverbs from the past bring us inward and cause us to reflect on our own beliefs, just as Chi does when contemplating Chinonso’s choices and deeds. Chi, though, poses questions that are more profound than those that revolve around Chinonso’s day-to-day activities. Chi invokes a different spirit each time it needs advice.
