The main focus of Ancilliary Justice is an AI’s personal journey as she deals with her own losses, develops new connections, and attempts to maybe transform the empire.

All the honours that this book has won are well-deserved. The writing is strong and the author is assured. The interesting world-building that is based on the Roman Empire, like most space operas.

I’ve finally finished reading Ann Leckie’s first book, which won the author countless accolades and fans. This is the first novel of a trilogy that is very much a classic space opera, and as we quickly discover, the main character is not someone we would typically recognize as a person.

In this book, everyone is referred to as she because we are now in the Radch Empire, where the Radchaai does not really recognize gender. There is a reason for this since our heroine, despite appearing to be a fairly typical human, is actually a Justice of Toren auxiliary.

Although some people seem to have trouble understanding it, it is basically a simple idea. In this book, a spaceship has artificial intelligence, and in order for it to work effectively, there are individuals attached to it. This allows the spaceship to perform maintenance, dispatch scouts, and help with general vessel operations. In that case, these people resemble robots in certain ways…
