Since Phileas Fogg is a realistic, logical guy with extremely predictable tendencies, his decision to accept a wager that will require him to attempt to circumnavigate the globe in no less than 80 days surprises both Passepartout, his recently recruited servant, and the gentlemen’s club to which he belongs. Fogg sets out to circumnavigate the globe by railway, steamboat, elephant, sledge, and any other method he may find, accompanied by the patient yet eager-to-please Passepartout and a charming Indian woman. But there are setbacks and difficulties along the way—the worst of which is a detective who thinks Fogg is using the voyage as a ruse to get away with a crime and is determined to stop him by any means.
The primary character Mr Fogg wagers his clubmates that he can travel around the world in 80 days, which a newspaper claimed was feasible if there were no delays. Mr Fogg is an obsessive-compulsive routine lover who values time. But this placid, contented man has such depth; there is so much going on behind the surface. Being constantly willing to fail the goal in order to aid his companions and never dreads or thinks about any difficulties that may come his way. He is also adept at operating a boat. Does anyone know if he has been in any of Verne’s earlier books because it appears like he has an incredible past?
