Assassin’s Quest by Robin Hobb

FitzChivalry The Farseer Trilogy’s concluding book features a return of Farseer and the Fool, capping the 25th anniversary of Robin Hobb’s renowned trilogy. With the addition of Assassin’s Quest, which features ten full-colour pictures by Magali Villeneuve, the matching trilogy is now finished. Enter the enthralling conclusion of this epic fantasy modern classic, which is filled with adventure, magic, betrayal, and sacrifice.

By the hands of his son Regal, King Shrewd is now dead. As is Fitz, or so his adversaries and allies think. But with the aid of his companions and his beast magic, he manages to escape the grave, both physically and psychologically traumatized. The kingdom is likewise on the verge of collapse: Regal has pillaged and fled the capital, while Prince Verity, the legitimate heir, is missing and may be dead in the course of his irrational quest. The Six Duchies can only be saved by Verity’s return or the heir his princess is carrying.

Fitz won’t wait, though. He sets out on a mission to murder Regal, propelled by feelings of grief and regret. He discovers raging currents of power within himself while on the journey, currents that would either drown him or transform him into something greater than he was.

A youngster born into a noble family faces hardship after hardship, but Fitz’s journey is never simple because he was born a bastard, and he is despised by many people who ought to love and support him. However, he does meet people and receive assistance along the road.
Fitz’s perspective first-person trilogy is very character-focused. The main antagonists of the realm, both internal and external, are heavily discussed in the plot. But in my opinion, Fitz’s character arc is what propels this drama in the first place. He embarks on this journey at the age of barely six when he first appears in the book.

Instead of the typical confrontation between swords or magic or swords, Fitz’s struggle, or main conflict, is more or more internal. These components do exist, of course, but the novel is more about battling one’s personal demons than it is about the face of battle. The emergence of Fitz’s personality and that of those closest to him draws us in. Even at the very end, there is a considerable failure, disillusionment, unmet hopes, and loss.
