One of the best Asterix stories ever, packed with humour and puns. The Gauls travel to Egypt to aid the druid Getafix’s architect friend Edifis, who is unable to construct a suitable structure despite being needed to do so. In order for Cleopatra to win her wager against Julius Caesar, Edifis must build a palace in a month. However, Artifis, a rival of Edifis, would attempt to undermine his efforts. But the story is only incidental. We ask our Gaulish pals for loads of humour and antics, and we get them! By the way, unless you have a problem with cartoon violence where people get pounded around quite a bit, these stories are appropriate for both young and old readers.
One of the series’ most entertaining episodes is this one. The major targets of the jokes are Cleopatra’s excessive pomp and the terrible building abilities of the edifice. The renowned Lighthouse welcomes Asterix to ancient Alexandria; Asterix makes a clue about the French involvement in the Suez canal’s future development; Cleopatra sends Getafix some historical scrolls from the renowned Library; and so forth. The funny and instructive cultural and historical references will be appreciated by readers.
Asterix, a small man with a large moustache, and his pal Obelix, a big man, are hilarious. Both Asterix and Obelix, who are powerful and swift, fall in love with Cleopatra. They behave in an absurd manner around her, which is entertaining. This novel also has a puppy by the name of Dogmatix. I enjoy reading books that feature dogs or puppies.
