King’s abilities as a horror and non-horror author are comparable to Babe Ruth’s and Shohei Ohtani’s pitching and hitting skills. Billy Summers is a former Marine and sniper who served in the Iraq War. He has evolved into a top-tier hitman in the real world. He has killed successfully seventeen times—eighteen times if you count the man he killed as a toddler who had just murdered his younger sister. His mother, who was an alcoholic, drug addict, and picker of bad men, always told him to watch out for and protect his little sister, and this still haunts him today.
When the narrative opens… Billy is debating whether or not to take a $2,000,000 “kill” that he claims will be his final assignment before quitting the hitman business and disappearing. The head of the Vegas Mob and his goon are in town to try and persuade Billy to accept the position. For Billy, they have already created a “front.” All they need is for Billy or any of the other identities to agree. They already have a phoney name, a rental house, rented office space, and a fake agent. If and when a high-profile criminal is extradited to Red Bluff, the task is to assassinate him.
Although Billy Summers is a hitman, he is a good person. He exclusively eliminates criminals. He is the main character of Stephen King’s most recent book, “Billy Summers,” which, much to the dismay of ardent horror lovers, is a sincere tearjerker and a page-turning masterpiece of human drama. Billy, who has decided to retire from his profession, is asked by two of his close friends, Frank and Nick, to complete one more task. Billy has been paid by Nick, who Billy knows well or at least believes he does, to assassinate Joel Allen, a rapist who fled his horrifying act. Billy is aware that Nick is not the one who wants Allen killed, despite the fact that he pretends to be unaware for his own protection. That honour belongs to a big shot who is unidentified and concealed in the background.
Billy receives a strong cover from Nick’s team. He is a writer now revising a book. Next, as Billy patiently awaits a prisoner transfer to the courthouse across the street, Billy is set up in a new town, given a new identity, and given office space. He will fire the fatal shot at his intended victim from the window. Eventually, he will vanish. Billy is not, however, as foolish as Nick and his gang of accomplices have made him out to be. Billy detects a rat, and when the work is through, he entirely disappears out of concern for his own safety.
King’s characters are as real and vividly portrayed as ever. Billy is a skilled sharpshooter and an Iraq War veteran. He started writing his memoir as part of his cover as he waited for his prey. The specifics of his life then become clear. The book-inside-the-book plot is presented to the reader by King, just as he did in “Misery,” and it continues to operate flawlessly. Billy walks us through his tumultuous background and the brutal battles of Fallujah before stopping and leaving us to wait for the conclusion. Young and more intelligent than she realizes, Alice. She’s still disturbed by what happened, despite her feisty exterior.
Also, she has grown attached to Billy, an older guy who saved her life and whom she will now follow wherever he goes. Billy has one reliable friend, Bucky, who acts as a kind of hitman’s agency. Billy is supposed to receive his final payment from Bucky, but the money never shows up.
Billy has now made the decision to go after both the person who hired him and the person who paid for the work to be done. Harry and Alice set out on a cross-country journey as distinct individuals, and the plot develops into frantic, exciting action. As always, there are plenty of surprises, twists, and turns.
