Blacktop Wasteland is a thrilling heist book that focuses on the wheel man, the getaway driver, similar to a more grounded version of Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver. Despite the fact that I don’t know anything about S.A. Cosby, I think that he is a vehicle enthusiast since his explanations of engine mechanics and driving appear to be based on actual experience rather than study.

Cosby bases the plot of the book on the standard noir framework. Beauregard “Bug” Montage had a rough start to life as a young adult, engaging in minor crimes until a job gone wrong landed him in juvenile jail. By the time Bug exited, Anthony (also known as “Ant”) had vanished and was never again heard from.

Ant only left Bug with their beloved, modified Plymouth Duster. It was transformed into a famed street-racing machine, and only Bug had the skills to handle it.

When Bug got out of jail, he went straight. He bought an old garage and converted it into a service centre for vehicles. He wed again. (They were both teenagers during their first marriage, which has long since ended.) And up until a competitor shop run by a franchise called Precision moved into town and undercut his rates, he had a successful business.

He lost clients and fell behind on his mortgage payments because he was unable to compete with Precision’s prices. Meanwhile, Darren, his son, requires glasses. Javon, his other son, needed braces. If she could only afford the tuition, his first marriage’s daughter Ariel, who is intelligent enough to go to college and succeed, would.

When Ronnie Sessions reappears in Bug’s life, his financial situation is dire. Redneck heroin addict and career crook Ronnie is constantly seeking the next victim. Additionally, he is the idiot who planned the miscalculation that led to Bug’s imprisonment as a juvenile in the past. However, he has a failsafe plan this time…
