Blade Runner by Philip K. Dick

Millions of people have died in the World War by 2021, wiping out entire species and exiling humanity. For those who are left lusting after any living thing, and for those who cannot buy one, businesses create remarkably lifelike replicas of animals like horses, birds, cats, and sheep. They have even created people. Androids that are sufficiently advanced that they cannot be distinguished from real men or women are given to immigrants to Mars. The government forbids these synthetic beings from visiting Earth out of concern about the damage they might cause. Unauthorized androids are living covertly among humans after being forced into hiding. Rick Deckard, a licensed bounty hunter, is given the assignment to track down and “retire” rogue androids. Nevertheless, when cornered, androids fight back—and they do so violently.

This book takes us to a future America that is very dissimilar from the one we are familiar with. The world is gradually disappearing after a catastrophic nuclear war that wiped out innumerable plant and animal species. Young, healthy, and fertile people are permitted to emigrate to colonies in other worlds. The androids follow them as slaves, employees, and servants. Some people continue to live on Earth for their own purposes. For instance, J.R. Isadore is a “special,” someone who isn’t genetically qualified to leave the planet. On the other hand, Rick Deckard is a bounty hunter, whose job it is to find and eliminate androids that invade Earth.

Deckard has been given a special task because six Nexus-6 androids, the newest type, have arrived close by. Deckard needs to “retire” them all before they escape because they are powerful, clever, and nearly indistinguishable from humans.
This book plunges you into a universe of established terminology and rapid speech right away. As the narrative develops, the personalities come to life. Imagine living in a society where androids are essentially indistinguishable from people and where controlling one’s feelings is as simple as dialling a phone. This is the dystopian future Philip K. Dick has imagined, where people have managed to live as best they can in harsh conditions.

The story takes place in 1992, after a nuclear conflict that has left Earth in a pretty dire situation. There are still people in our world, some of whom for a variety of reasons will never be permitted to leave, although many have left to colonize other planets. Rick Deckard, our primary character, is a bounty hunter for the police who searches for illegal androids while residing with his wife in the ruins of San Francisco. He’s been assigned a new task because the top bounty hunter was hospitalized after being attacked by an android. The most recent humanoids have a Nexus-6 frame, making it more difficult to identify them than with earlier models.

As a result, Rick is aware of his target, but also has a working relationship with the company that created the device in question. This way, the company is aware of the methods used to identify its products and is better equipped to make changes.

Dick disclosed the sources of this book’s influences during his lifespan, but since then, thanks to the movie, the narrative has had a significant impact on a number of people in a variety of media. What is real and what is fake is the overarching subject of this story, but there are many additional components as well, such as empathy, the significance of religion in many people’s lives, and the harm we cause to the environment.
