In McCarthy’s novel, there are a few recurring themes: the brutal violence and desperation that characterize human sagas with no end in sight; the almost total absence of women; the haunting, spine-chilling, lyrical physical descriptions of nature and devastated landscapes; and the metaphors that literally drip from every sentence. However, “Blood Meridian” pushes each of these story techniques to its absolute limit. Prominent figures like Harold Bloom have called it the most profound embodiment of human success and weakness since “Moby Dick.” It’s still one of the most difficult, demanding, and draining pieces of fiction, though.
Cormac McCarthy’s novel Blood Meridian is filled with violence and more violence. It centres on The Kid, who eludes his family and travels to the southwest United States and Mexico to carry out deadly deeds. Around the desert, he encounters other vicious, hungry people who kill kids, burns down houses, and throw puppies from bridges. You can infer from this description that this book is emotionless. Everyone in this book seeks to pick fights with one another, and when they aren’t fighting, they take advantage of one another for their personal gain. As a result, no one is actually shown to be decent. Because of the tone, it is clear that the characters in the novel don’t care about the horrifying things they commit.
