Book Lovers by Emily Henry

The only thing Nora Stephens has ever done in her life is read books, therefore she is not the typical heroine. Not the strong-willed woman, not the carefree dream girl, and certainly not the sweetheart. In reality, the only people who view Nora as a hero are her clients—for whom she secures sizable deals in her role as a ruthless literary agent—and her cherished little sister Libby.

This is why, when Libby encourages her to take a sister’s trip away, she decides to go to Sunshine Falls, North Carolina for the entire month of August. She has ideas of a small town metamorphosis for Nora, who she is persuaded has to become the heroine in her own story.

Nora, however, continues running into Charlie Lastra, a bookish, brooding editor from back in the city, instead of going on picnics in the meadows or running into gorgeous rural doctors or bulging-forearm bartenders. If they had never met before and it hadn’t been cute, it would be a meet-cute.

Charlie and Nora are repeatedly brought together—in a series of coincidences that no editor worth their salt would permit—and while Charlie is aware that he is nobody’s hero and Nora is aware that she is not the ideal heroine, what they learn may just tear apart the carefully constructed stories they have written about themselves.

The humour and chemistry between Nora and Charlie are fantastic. When their irritated tones from their unsatisfactory first encounter gradually change to quiet flirting to blatant dancing around a summer fling and they are pleased with themselves for receiving the reactions they sought from the other person? I was yelling, dancing, and crying with joy. Libby, Nora’s sister, made a to-do list for the month they would be on vacation. Crazy small activities to relax and try something new. Because she believed it was what her sister wanted and because she wanted to always be there for her, Nora spent some time going through the list with Libby. Charlie had a significant role in her ability to enjoy her time in Sunshine Falls at one point.

Both heartwarming and heartbreaking revelations were made. Don’t even think about saying goodbye because they know it’s just a summer fling. Charlie is an editor with a track record for finding hits, while Nora is a successful literary agent who can be a bit of a workaholic. Their initial encounter is unsuccessful. Dusty Fielding’s newest book, which is set in the little town of Sunshine Falls, North Carolina, is the subject of Nora’s request that Charlie works on it. He declines her.

When “Once in a Lifetime” becomes a bestseller two years later, Nora’s sister Libby convinces her to take a break for a few weeks before giving birth to her third kid. Nora has no idea where they are going—Sunshine Falls.

As Nora and Charlie get to know one another and start to fall in love, what happens next could be the plot of a romantic comedy; I could practically picture it playing in my brain. Although there are undoubtedly challenges in their path, there are no spoilers, so you’ll have to read it for yourself.

Since Nora is the only character in the novel, we are able to understand her thoughts and how they evolve as the plot develops. There is a lot of humour about living in a small town where everyone knows your business, the characters are wonderfully portrayed, and we get fascinating views into the world of books and bookshops.

The friendship between Nora and Charlie is what makes Book Lovers stand out. This is one of the best romance novels because of the clever dialogue, entertaining emails, and the fact that there is enough interaction between them for their romance to be plausible. After a while, the narrative thread of Nora trying to solve all of her sister’s problems started to feel a little repetitious, but the conclusion was extremely strong.
