Broken Harbor by Tana French
In the Dublin Murder Squad, Mick “Scorcher” Kennedy is the main character. The largest case of the year ends up in his hands because he follows the rules and plays honestly.
Patrick Spain and his two young children were murdered in one of the many partially abandoned “luxury” complexes that dot Ireland. Jenny, his wife, is receiving intensive treatment. Scorcher initially believes the case will be simple to solve, but there are far too many seemingly unrelated details that remain unexplained, including the half-dozen baby monitors pointing at holes smashed in the Spains’ walls, the files that were deleted from the family’s computer, and the tale Jenny told her sister about a shadowy intruder getting past the house’s locks.

Additionally, Scorcher’s problematic sister Dina has recollections of their upbringing in this area, which used to be known as Broken Harbor. At the time, Scorcher believed he held these memories under tight control.
In the Woods, The Likeness, Faithful Place, Broken Harbor, The Secret Place, and The Trespasser are further works by Tana French. The Edgar, Anthony, Macavity, and Barry prizes, the Los Angeles Times Award for Best Mystery/Thriller, and the Irish Book Award for Crime Fiction are just a few of the accolades her books have received. Her family resides with her in Dublin.
Like every book before it, Broken Harbor focuses on a certain character from a previous book. This time, the culprit is “Scorcher” Kennedy, the detective who was investigating the murder in Faithful Place but botched the case, allowing someone else to take the lead. Kennedy gets assigned a new case at the beginning of Broken Port, a family slain in a community being built out of an old harbour where, it turns out, Kennedy and his family used to vacation years ago. This is Kennedy’s first time out of the doghouse in a long time.
Two little children and a husband were killed; the woman, who is barely alive, is unable to speak about the killings immediately away, and, like with other murder mysteries, the pressure is on. On his first major murder investigation, Kennedy is teamed with Richie, a young man from the wrong side of the tracks. Kennedy chose Richie because he has never sought a full-time partner; instead, he educates all the new recruits before handing them off to someone else.
