The discovery of numerous unmarked graves on an abandoned dairy farm close to Salem, Oregon, sets off a series of events that reveal many people’s scars and serve as a reminder to a murderer that his work isn’t done. Given that it turns out that these are the bones of kids who boarded a school bus after a field trip and were never seen again, investigative journalist Michael Brody is interested in the remains beyond only his professional obligations. Anything can’t stay a secret for more than 18 years. Everyone believed Chris Jacobs might have answers when one of the kids turned up two years after the bus vanished, but he had no recollection of what had happened.
One of the missing children was Michael’s brother, whose body was not found. Michael sets out to track down Chris Jacobs, who is now an adult, in order to ask him some questions. Jamie Jacobs was able to retrieve her brother, but he was not the same cheerful child who had boarded the bus that day. She declines to assist Michael when he asks her to help him find her brother because she doesn’t want to put Chris through more suffering. Since Chris has been hiding out for years, Jamie agrees to assist Michael as events unfold, and the two of them set out to finally unravel the riddles behind this horrific incident.
However, they are not the only ones seeking for Chris, and finding him quickly is crucial. It all begins when a 13-year-old who claims to be Chris Jacobs is discovered. 18 years later, an old school bus and several child and adult bodies are discovered. A school bus carrying pupils vanished and was never found for 20 years. Michael Brody’s family was among those left without closure. As only Chris returned home, he hopes that one of the bodies that have been discovered is that of his brother Daniel.
However, it turns out that Daniel’s body wasn’t among those discovered. As a result, Chris Jacobs is the only person who knows the truth about what happened and, maybe, can provide Michael with some answers. The problem is that he disappeared, and not even his sister Jamie is aware of his precise location. When she is attacked, she realizes that Chris’s situation is dire. Reluctantly, she will seek for her brother with Michael’s assistance, and the two of them will learn some disturbing details about Chris’s ordeal along the road.
