Caliban’s War by James S. A. Corey
We’re not on our own. A Martian marine is witnessing the killing of her unit by a gigantic supersoldier on Ganymede, the breadbasket of the outer planets. A powerful politician on Earth tries to stop the rekindling of the intergalactic war. And on Venus, an alien protomolecule has taken over the planet, causing enormous, enigmatic alterations and posing a threat to the rest of the solar system.
James Holden and the Rocinante crew have been maintaining order for the Outer Planets Alliance in the wide desert of space. The future of humanity depends on whether a single ship can stop an alien invasion that may have already started when they agree to assist a scientist hunt for a missing child in war-torn Ganymede.

Epic space battles, political intrigue, a compelling mystery, and a small crew of individuals just trying to do the right thing are all there in this terrific sequel to the series’ first book.
The Rocinante’s crew has been employed by the OPA for the previous 12 months. They arrive with supplies for relief after a catastrophe on Ganymede, the outer planets’ breadbasket. Soon they are agreeing to assist a scientist in his search for his lost daughter. Of course, after they discover connections to Protogen and the protomolecule, the case of the missing person is no longer as straightforward. Once more, Holden and his crew are caught in the thick of an enormous shitstorm.
In addition to Holden’s, this book offers us three new points of view: Pax is a botanist who is looking for his daughter in Ganymede. Bobbie, a Martian marine, witnessed the massacre of her entire squad by a gigantic supersoldier. Meanwhile, Avasarala, a UN diplomat, is making every effort to stop a conflict between Earth, Mars, and the Belt.
As we last left off, the mysterious alien mass on Eros had been lured to Venus by the lady whose infection had set off the entire series of events. On Ganymede, a doctor named Strickland now kidnaps four-year-old Mei and many other kids, all of whom have severe immune system issues, hours before everything goes to hell. The solitary survivor of the violent, unstoppable monster attack on Ganymede’s surface is Gunnery Sergeant Roberta (Bobbie) Draper, a Martian Marine. This monster appears to be connected to the “protomolecule” that led to the alien virus that is currently on Venus.
In Ganymede’s orbit, a shooting conflict between Earth and Mars has somehow broken out at the same time. Ganymede is the main source of agriculture in the solar system, and no one wants to give it up even as it is being evacuated. Captain Jim Holden, who has been working for the OPA alongside his crew, is dispatched to investigate the problem as it worsens. He and his team resolve to save the girl after meeting Mei’s father, scientist Prax Meng. Meanwhile, UN politician Chrisjen Avasarala is making every effort to stop hostilities between Earth and Mars. Yet, as time passes, she becomes increasingly aware that some of her own people are attempting to outwit her and start a full-scale conflict.
