Career of Evil by Robert Galbraith

A woman’s dismembered limb is what Robin Ellacott discovers startled as she opens an unexpected delivery. Cormoran Strike, her supervisor and a private investigator, is less shocked but nonetheless concerned. He believes that four persons from his past may be to blame, each of whom is capable of unimaginable persistent savagery. Strike and Robin take matters into their own hands and probe into the dark and twisted worlds of the other three men because the police are concentrating on the one suspect that Strike has practically ruled out. Time is running out for the two of them as more heinous crimes are committed.

Career of Evil is a devilishly smart mystery with shocking turns around every corner as well as a riveting tale of a man and a woman who are at a turning point in their personal and professional lives. This book will be impossible to put down.
We discover a lot more about Robin in this book, including her history and the motivations behind why she values her profession so highly. Strike can recall at least four guys who could have sent him a severed limb, which reveals more about his past. These include soldiers from his time in the service and Strike’s mother’s younger, second husband, who was exonerated of her murder.

Strike and Robin set out to find the man who brought them the gruesome package, who is killing women, and who has Robin in his crosshairs since work has dried up and personal concerns are getting in the way. The main crime storyline of Career of Evil is intertwined with the story of Strike and his assistant, or potential junior partner, Robin Ellacott’s, convoluted personal lives. The death of her fiancé’s mother forced Robin’s wedding to be postponed in the last book, but when Career Of Evil starts, Robin and Matthew are still on schedule for a June wedding despite their continued disagreement over Robin’s job with Strike.

She opens the enormous, oblong bundle a courier just left for her without giving it much attention because she’s anticipating a shipment of wedding favours to be brought to the office at the beginning of Career Of Evil, only to find that it includes a woman’s dismembered leg. The murder mystery in this instalment of the series is a deeply personal one: the killer, whose point of view several chapters follow, is obsessively stalking Robin and seems to have a longstanding grudge against Strike, who famously lost a leg during his military career – plus, the leg comes with a note quoting lyrics from Blue oyster Cult, the favourite band of Strike’s deceased, super-groupie mother.

But of course, we’re talking about Strike here. When asked who may despise him enough to deliver pieces of a corpse to his office, he promptly comes up with four suspects rather than just one. Which of them is the most likely suspect? Whose leg was it anyway? How will the murderer step up his game?

The Cormoran Strike series’ Career Of Evil is without a doubt the darkest instalment to date. As you can anticipate, the chapters from the anonymous killer are extremely gory and horrific because there are many bodies and all three suspects are nasty misogynists.

Strike and Robin face some challenges in this instalment of the Robert Galbraith series, which are as much about their complicated friendship as they are about crime. It’s interesting to note that Matthew, Robin’s fiancé, has become more needy and domineering in Career Of Evil as opposed to The Cuckoo’s Calling, where he was bland but mainly well-intentioned before becoming a little petulant.
