Catch-22 by Joseph Heller

This is the tale of the legendary, whiny bombardier, Yossarian, a hero who is enraged because thousands of people he has never met are trying to murder him. It takes place in Italy during World War II. However, his army, which continually raises the number of sorties the troops must fly to finish their duty, is his actual issue, not the adversary. Yossarian will be in violation of Catch-22, a hilariously sinister bureaucratic rule if he makes any attempt to excuse himself from the dangerous missions he has been assigned. A man is considered insane if he continues to fly risky combat missions, but if he makes a formal request to be relieved of duty, he is proven sane and is therefore ineligible to be relieved.

It tells the tale of a man named Yossarian who was a part of an aircrew, a bomber squadron, in Italy in 1944. He and his coworkers fly bombing flights over northern Italy and Germany. Yossarian believes that war is foolish and wants to end it, which is the catch-22 of the title. But since that is such a logical viewpoint, no one would believe him. Only the insane would be permitted to leave a conflict zone, and anyone who believes that war is an idiotic, terrible, ludicrous misadventure is actually incredibly sane. Yossarian’s war is therefore an effort to establish his insanity, despite the fact that he is the sanest person on the air base.

It mostly centres on Yossarian’s quest to get out of this extremely horrifying, fatal farce that he is embroiled. Although it is a strongly anti-war book, it is written with great talent and humour. It’s just illustrating the fundamental absurdity of war, not beating a war drum. It is a fantastic book.
