First time generally accessible! The comics by renowned underground cartoonist Gary Panter are generally chaotic and entertaining, but they also go deeper. Cola Madnes, which was first published in this country in 2001 after being drawn in 1983, stars Jimbo, Panter’s enduring punk everyman, along with a cast of eccentric characters that also includes Bob War, Uncle Garcia, a smart-talking dinosaur, a beleaguered guardian in a bathrobe, and Kokomo, a native of an unspecified tropical land that has been colonized by oil companies. A number of Panter’s themes are presented in this delightfully absurd story, including Jimbo’s endearing, humorous self-doubt. Other themes include Jimbo’s family relationships, humanity’s troubled relationship with nature and technology, and the struggle between self-control and an irresistible urge.
