J. R. Ward resides in the South with her devoted golden retriever and her extremely supportive husband. She started working in healthcare in Boston after completing law school and held the position of chief of staff at one of the top academic medical centers in the country for a significant amount of time. She is the creator of the Fallen Angels and Black Dagger Brotherhood books.

J. R. Ward has produced a fantastic contemporary vampire romance. A fascinating fusion of vampire warrior society, American street culture, and fated love. You will adore this book if you enjoy Laurell K. Hamilton’s vampire and alphamale romance novels. Many of the familiar elements of vampire mythology are depicted in Ward’s rich modern world, but he also includes some interesting new elements including class distinctions, mating customs, and a deity. The plot doesn’t suffer because of the romance, unlike so many other PNR stories. The writing strikes a perfect balance between description and action.

Nothing is happening that humans are aware of. Vampires have a life expectancy of over a thousand years. They have a human-like appearance upon birth, can go outside in the sunlight, and consume regular food and liquids. Their bodies must have the blood of a vampire of the opposite sex during an extremely perilous stage known as Transition that begins around the time they are 25. Within hours, they grow significantly in size, sprout fangs, and become sun-sensitive. Adult vampires still need to eat and drink normally, but they also need to “take the vein” of a vampire of the opposite sex at least once every two weeks, and sometimes more frequently in cases of injury, stress, or intense activity.

A female will have a “Needing” moment, which is when she can become pregnant, about 5 years following her transition and then every 10 years after that. A female experiences intense sexual urges while in need. If she wants to avoid becoming pregnant, she must be drugged or served by a man. The number of vampires is dwindling as a result of the war and the high baby and maternal mortality rate. Male vampires are incredibly envious and overly protective of the linked females and their offspring. Although bonding may occur involuntarily, it must be formalized through a mating ceremony. The king of the vampires is Wrath, who for many years eschewed performing his royal duties in favor of living as a Brotherhood member.

Additionally, there is a class called the glymera where outward appearances are everything. Other vampires living in society exist as well.

The Doggen are a subspecies of vampires. They have a lifespan of fewer than 500 years and can venture outside in the sunshine. They follow well-established social norms and have an innate drive to serve vampires.

Due to The Omega’s erratic behaviour, The Lessening Society is led by a fore lesser, who regularly changes. Lessers are made from humans, usually, criminals, who have been left sterile and unable to reproduce but who will live as long as no steel touches their chest. Once altered, they will gradually lose all pigmentation in their eyes, skin, and hair and will smell like baby powder.
