Demon Slayer by Koyoharu Gotouge

Tanjiro embarks on the Demon Slayer’s journey in order to save his sister and get revenge on his family.

Tanjiro Kamado is a good-hearted man who sells charcoal in Taisho-era Japan. But a demon slaughters his entire family, shattering his tranquil existence. The only survivor is his little sister Nezuko, who has been changed into a demon herself. Tanjiro embarks on a perilous quest to restore his sister to normalcy and vanquish the demon responsible for his wife’s demise.

Tanjiro hardly knows where to begin while learning how to exterminate demons, therefore it won’t be simple. If Tanjiro can prevent Giyu from killing his sister first, the sudden emergence of another boy named Giyu who claims to know what’s going on might offer some explanations.

The story is set in Japan during the Taisho era (1912–1926), and our young protagonist, Tanjiro Kamado, is travelling from his mountain home into the town below to sell some coal in order to help feed and clothe his family. The villagers welcome him with open arms and seem to adore him. It soon becomes apparent that Tanjiro appears to possess a special talent that the rest of us lack (because of course he would). The villagers ask him to use this talent to settle their disputes and to help them with other small tasks around the village.

The reader is informed by a friendly guy that demons prowl in the shadows of the woods before he knows it is becoming late and that the trip home is even more dangerous at night. Tanjiro grudgingly accepts when he insists that he spend the night with him and go home the next morning. He leaves for home the following morning, only to return to find his family brutally murdered. Except for his little sister, who seemed to have turned into a demon herself, everyone died.

Our little Tanjiro and his fang-y little sister are sent to see an even more mysterious sensei who will train Tanjiro to become the thing demons have nightmares about by the cookie-cutter, cheesy, and “mystery” demon-slaying stranger (who is also far too young-looking to be so sarcastic). Bring on the Rocky theme tune and the incredibly corny (and once more, oh-so-generic) training montage, which only lasts for a half-chapter but is supposed to take place over the course of around two years. Tanjiro barely seems to have aged at all, save for minor hair growth…
