The Wimpy Kid series is improved by the addition of “Big Shot.” Basketball is a sport that is extensively emphasized in the book, thus it was intriguing to follow Greg’s team’s season-long results. Ruby Bird’s reappearance was wonderful, even though other characters like Rowley and Rodrick played relatively few parts.

In this novel, Jeff Kinney did a great job of portraying Greg as a fumbling middle schooler. The start was simply wonderful! Greg’s parents tried and attempted to get him involved in sports before he tested out and made the middle school basketball team. Nonetheless, on a terrible team. In a competition for the poorest of the worst teams, they kept on losing. Greg then hit the game-winning shot backwards in the decisive game! While the narrative wouldn’t have felt as complete if they hadn’t won, I appreciated that Jeff Kinney allowed them to triumph.

Greg has zero interest in sports. But his mother is, having played basketball for the state team. She instructs Greg to choose a sport to participate in, and after giving it some thought, he decides on basketball. Simply said, it’s not a good match. Some kids are just not athletically inclined. Some kids just aren’t cut out to be physicians. Parents must stop imposing their own views on their kids and start accepting them for who they are.
