She will also reveal the secret of an ancient circle of standing stones and the truth about a love that endures the ages.

In a frantic attempt to preserve the child and the man she loves, Claire continues her captivating journey through the treacherous French court and the threat of Jacobite conspiracies to the Scottish Highlands.

Jamie and Claire have escaped to France, where the first half of the novel is situated. While he (Jared) is away on a business trip, Jamie’s cousin Jared assigns him to handle all of his social and professional responsibilities. The French court so welcomes Jamie and Claire. It makes sense that Jamie would be welcomed because he had travelled to France before, served in their military, and was already at court. For Claire, however, it makes no sense. She is Jamie’s wife, and her name does sound French. However, Ms Gabaldon has always been very explicit in her assertion that Claire is Very British. In the midst of the War of Austrian Succession, she is immediately welcomed into Louis XV’s court.

In this book, Jamie insisted that she resume her relationship with Frank where she had left it after travelling through time because he knew she was expecting and because he was confident he would die in the coming battle with the British at Culloden. Another element that occurs just before this one is Jamie’s release of a young English kid who attempts to assassinate him when he and Claire are camped outside. Despite being raised as Frank’s daughter and given the name Brianna after Jamie’s father, Brian, the daughter of Jamie and Claire is only released from her obligation to keep Brianna’s biological father a secret while Frank was still alive after his untimely death.

Brianna is unhappy and initially unable to accept this. Enter Roger Wakefield, whose adoptive father frequently assisted Frank Randall in tracking down historical information essential for his study as a historian. Roger develops feelings for Brianna, but that is another story. He does support Claire’s investigation and aids in Brianna and Claire’s understanding that JAMIE DID NOT perish at Culloden. Today, we learn that Claire became a mother and that she later entered the realm of academics to obtain her MD. Dr Joe Abernathy, her closest friend, is one more of those individuals whose details are revealed in other chapters of this complicated story.
