The novel initially begins as two separate storylines that eventually come together. On a business vacation in Florida, Colby and Morgan have a fortuitous encounter that profoundly alters both of their lives. Beverly is fearful of domestic abuse and feels compelled to leave with her son at all costs. She experiences actual, all-too-present fear. With heartstring-tugging turns and realistic settings, Sparks has once again brought characters and settings to life.
Although there is a love story, this tale has several unexpected turns. Despite Colby’s desire to perform, family obligations made him take over the ranch. He seizes the possibility when it presents itself to take a brief break from his regular existence. The love story element comes into play when he is drawn to Morgan, a young, wide-eyed college student who is also visiting with friends. The reader is initially unsure of how Beverly, who is incredibly agitated, fits into the plot of the book. Colby must bid Morgan goodbye and return to reality as her ambitions clash with those of her parents, her new love, and her dreams. Within a week, Beverly’s bubble of life bursts. It was interesting to read this twisted story.
