Playwright, academic, and renowned mystery writer Dorothy L. Sayers (1893–1957) is well known for her works featuring Lord Peter Wimsey, a gentleman detective.

Sayers was born in Oxford, England, and raised in the Bluntisham rectory. She received a scholarship to Oxford University where she studied contemporary languages and worked at the publishing business Blackwell’s, which released her debut collection of poems in 1916.

This is a story from her Lord Peter Wimsey/Harriet Vane sub-series, one of many in her body of work. Wimsey appears in all of Sayers’ mysteries, but beginning with 1930’s Strong Poison, she authored books alongside Harriet Vane, who serves as his companion in crime and—spoiler alert—eventual wife.
Harriet is a detective novelist who is on trial for murder in the book Strong Poison. She finds herself being charged with killing her ex-lover while conducting research on murder techniques for a book she is writing.

Wimsey looks into it and ultimately rescues her from that predicament. After being in the centre of that horrific media storm and the court case, she is attempting to escape it all in this book.

She has embarked on a solitary walking trip of England’s south coast. She wants to escape everything—murder, death, the media, etc. One day as she walks along a beach, she stops to have her lunch. As she looks about, she notices a rock out in the area of low tide and is a little perplexed. When she goes to look into it, she discovers a man who has been killed and had his neck cut.

She was seated there the entire time, with a clear view of the entire beach, and no one approached from the sea or from land, making it similar to a locked chamber or an impossible crime mystery…
