He meets the interesting and smart young man San Lang while travelling and clicks with him right away. San Lang, though, is undoubtedly more than meets the eye. What secrets are hidden behind that amiable smile?
The narrative follows Xie Lian’s journey, showing how a guy who had never loved himself worked hard to learn to love himself once more. The romance between Xie Lian and Hua Cheng is a really organic slow build; it isn’t at either extreme of being the complete focus or just crammed in clumsily, but it is still at the very clear centre of the narrative.
Xie Lian, the primary figure, appears to be the unluckiest god in heaven. He makes his third ascent to heaven only to encounter scorn from the other gods and heavenly authorities.
The characters have larger-than-life personalities and are witty and intelligent. The main character, Xie Lian, excels at thinking creatively and doesn’t accept thinking or acting in ways that conform to what other people expect of him. San Lang is a wonderful, endearing, humorous, and mysterious character. His developing friendship with Xie Lian is just as charming, funny, and noisy as their respective personalities.
Action, suspense, mystery, and humour abound in the narrative. The appearances of the characters are vividly (though easily readable) depicted. You can visualize the illustrations in your head even before you look at them. The illustrations, though! These are wonderful! They add to the atmosphere of the text by being strewn about (sweet, curious, anxious, etc). Characters’ facial expressions vividly convey their personalities and emotions.
