Homesick by Eshkol Nevo

This first novel offers a warm, endearing, and witty glimpse into the lives of each resident of an Israeli community.

In 1995, a college couple named Noa and Amir made the decision to live together. Amir studies psychology in Tel Aviv while Noa studies photography in Jerusalem. They decide on a modest apartment in a hillside community halfway between the two cities.

The village, which was formerly known as El-Kastel, was abandoned by its Arab residents in 1948 and is currently inhabited by Jewish immigrants from Kurdistan. A family mourning the loss of their oldest son who was murdered in Lebanon resides not far from the apartment. Yotam, the younger sibling who was abandoned by his parents, seeks assistance from Amir.

Saddiq works at a construction job further down the street and keeps an eye on the house. He is aware that this home, to which his mother still has the rusted key, is the one from which his family was expelled by Jews when he was a child. Even while these disparate personalities’ lives intertwine and friendships grow, conflicts seem to be building beneath the surface.

This captivating and compelling book gives us glimpses into the lives of the characters. Even though they all come from diverse backgrounds, we gradually realize how similar they are. A lovely and moving tale about history, love, family, and the true meaning of home, Homesick is.

This first book demonstrates a talented author who has a tremendous talent for creating characters with depth. A young student couple moves into a peaceful neighbourhood that is intended to be a compromise because it is midway between where they each study, in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, as the plot develops wonderfully. The lives of their neighbours are entwined into the plot all around them. It takes place in Israel in late 1995 or early 1996, during which Rabin was assassinated, the so-called “peace process” was disintegrating, and there had been a sharp increase in sporadic terrorist assaults. Every household deals with a unique set of issues and concerns.
