Horus Heresy – Galaxy in Flames by Ben Counter
Warmaster Horus now commands the victorious Imperial forces against the rebel world of Isstvan III after miraculously recovering from the severe wounds he sustained on Davin. It appears that the Sons of Horus, Death Guard, World Eaters, and Emperor’s Children Legions have formed an unparalleled coalition that is more than capable of overpowering the feeble mortal defences. In fact, such a show of force seems unnecessary. Garviel Loken and his devoted kinsmen decide to put aside their personal concerns in order to lead their companies to the surface, but once there, they discover the entire, horrible truth, and the Horus Heresy begins with the most heinous act of betrayal imaginable.

The portrayal of the bloodbath on Isstvan III and the final stand of the Sons of Horus faithful by Ben Counter reaches the pinnacle of military science fiction. He appears to have drawn significantly from historical accounts of the battles of Stalingrad and Berlin to produce a level of grim realism that surpasses that of the first two Horus books.
Great fighting scenes, however, are only the beginning of his success. He succeeds in two endeavours that raise his book above “excellent” military science fiction. First, he depicts the friendship that forms between soldiers on the battlefield and warmly and pathosically conveys that experience.
