The portrayal of the bloodbath on Isstvan III and the final stand of the Sons of Horus faithful by Ben Counter reaches the pinnacle of military science fiction. He appears to have drawn significantly from historical accounts of the battles of Stalingrad and Berlin to produce a level of grim realism that surpasses that of the first two Horus books.
Great fighting scenes, however, are only the beginning of his success. He succeeds in two endeavours that raise his book above “excellent” military science fiction. First, he depicts the friendship that forms between soldiers on the battlefield and warmly and pathosically conveys that experience.
