House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas

House of Earth and Blood, the first book in Sarah J. Maas’s famous Crescent City series, tells the tale of Bryce Quinlan, a half-Fae and half-human who pursues vengeance in a modern fantasy setting full of magic, peril, and scorching romance.

Before a demon killed her closest friends and left Bryce Quinlan alone, devastated, and wounded, she had the ideal life: she worked hard all day and partied all night. Bryce finds herself at the centre of the inquiry when the accused is in jail but the crimes resume. Whatever it takes, she will exact revenge for their deaths.

A prominent Fallen angel named Hunt Athalar is now a slave to the Archangels he once tried to overthrow. His extraordinary power and deadly talents have been trained to kill his boss’s foes without hesitation. However, with a demon destroying havoc in the city, he is presented with an alluring offer: if he helps Bryce identify the killer, he would be on the verge of freedom.

As Bryce and Hunt delve farther into Crescent City’s underbelly, they uncover a terrible force that threatens everything and everyone they value. They also discover a fiery passion in each other that, if they would only allow it, could set them both free.

This brilliantly innovative new fantasy series dives into the pain of loss, the cost of freedom—and the power of love—while featuring enduring characters, passionate romance, and page-turning intrigue.

Characters written by Sarah J. Maas consistently become your favourites, and you find yourself thinking about them nonstop. The fierce female characters are written by her. Over Aelin and Feyra, Bryce Quinlan has emerged as my preferred female MC. Bryce now has her flaws. She enjoys partying and having a good time. She is a fey-human hybrid. The other full-blooded fey abuse her brutally, and even her biological father is cruel to her. (Don’t even start me on that guy, the male. Grrrr!!). But she stands her ground and doesn’t put up with anything. Danika, her best friend, has been by her side ever since they met, and the two frequently argue. Until something unexpected occurs, everyone is aware that Bryce and Danika are inseparable.

Bryce’s world is turned upside down one night when she discovers her companions have been brutally slain by a demon and is left alone. After killing her friends two years ago, the demon is back at it, and since Bryce got a good look at it, the Archangel Micah wants her aid in finding the demon to stop it from killing again.

Hunt Athalar, Micah’s enslaved assassin, will be keeping an eye on her and helping with the inquiry. Hunt Athalar is a nasty (boy) fallen angel that is compelled to kill everyone at the command of his superior because he owes money for attempting to overthrow the Archangels. He has no choice but to keep an eye on Bryce, who first makes it challenging for him.

Hunt, though, begins to understand that Bryce is not who everyone believes him to be. He learns who Bryce is and the reasons for her actions. Bryce learns what transpired to cause Hunt to fall under Micah’s control. She also learns about Hunt’s greatest fear and how he lost his first love while fighting the archangels.
