Hunting Adeline by H. D. Carlton

Death follows me, but he cannot stand a chance against me. I’m stranded in a world where there are men-eating creatures and people who aren’t who they appear. They won’t retain me permanently. I struggle to find my way back to the beast who stalks me at night because I can no longer identify the person I’ve become. They refer to me as a diamond, yet all they’ve produced is a death angel…

I’ve always been a predator; brutality is entrenched in my own being. I discover that I can no longer restrain the beast when what is mine is taken from me in the middle of the night, like a diamond buried within a fortress. As I rip this universe apart in search of her, blood will cover the ground. and return her to her rightful place. Anyone who has deceived me will not be spared from my fury.

When you’re hunting Adeline, the darkness is the kind that makes you doubt all you know about people and causes your dark little soul to wither away until only a Zade can save you.

Like Haunting, Hunting is as captivating and authentic. It is entirely different but equally captivating. It is sinister, insane, represents the worst aspects of humanity, and is unrepentant. There are also resilience and strength.

Addie’s physical and psychological stress has destroyed both her and Zade. There is no simple ride into the sunset or happily ever after. It is brutal and tragic. Addie had only seen his jagged parts before; she had not yet seen that aspect of him. When she stumbles, Zade is there to support her by standing firm behind her. He is kind and loving, and if necessary, he will wait till the end of time for her. There is no pressure or force.

When attempting to overthrow a group that uses child sacrifice as part of a ceremony for initiates, Zade was hurt in an explosion. Addie was abducted, forced off the road, and brought to Francesca, a “groomer,” whose purpose is to turn the young women into suitable sex slaves in preparation for auction. She instructs them on proper behaviour, how to dress, and what not to do.

This section concentrates on the lessons Addie and the other girls learn, the cruelty they experience, and the penalties Francesca and the abductors inflict on them. It also focuses on Zade’s search for Addie and the individuals who kidnapped her.

Following her discovery and rescue, Addie focuses on recovering from her injuries and moving on, and Zade remains by her side throughout the entire process. Like every abuse survivor, she has thoughts and feelings about herself and coping mechanisms for these thoughts and feelings.
