Wayland Maynard, who is just eight years old, discovers a note that reads, “I am not who you believe I am,” and is left in a state of shock and despair after witnessing his father commit himself. If not the caring guy Wayland knew, then who was his father? Wayland is so terrified that he hides the note, but his fears are really just beginning.
Eight years later, Wayland discovers something startling and is certain that the note holds the key to revealing a past that his mother and other residents of the town desire to keep hidden.
Wayland looks for the truth with the assistance of two pals. Together, they enlighten the public about dangerous messages written in his father’s old books, the dark past of the town’s most influential family, and a weird tragedy that might be connected to Wayland’s birth. With each new piece of information, Wayland’s doubts about everyone around him grow and more questions are raised. He’ll soon look back and regret ever finding the message, believing in the truth, or having faith in his friends.
A brilliant, compulsive, and jarring story of loss, obsession, and fate in which eight words result in lives of devastation is I Am Not Who You Think I Am.
This story flows well and is written effectively. It’s the kind of narrative you can read in a matter of seconds—all 50 pages of it. I thought it was great. Although I had a rough idea of the finale as I read it, there were still a few surprises. I enjoy surprises, and I expect you will too.
