She prepares to phone for assistance, but something prevents her. The following morning, she discovers that one of the girls, the lovely Anna Ballard with green eyes, has vanished.

Anna is still missing a year later. Ella is plagued by remorse over what she didn’t accomplish, but she’s not the only one who struggles with forgetfulness. She is receiving threatening messages from unknown sources, which makes her fear for her life.

Then, an anniversary appeal makes it apparent that Anna’s loved ones might be concealing something. Sarah, Anna’s best friend, hasn’t been completely honest about what actually happened that night, and her parents have also been hiding things. Someone is withholding their knowledge of Anna’s whereabouts. Yet Ella is under observation.

On a train, Ella overhears two young males making out with (two) teenage girls, but she doesn’t take it seriously. She is on duty when she knows they are freshly released prisoners but says nothing. The following day, she learns that one of the girls, Anna Ballard, has vanished. Ella is inconsolable and regrets doing nothing.

Anna has been absent for a year. Ella worries about her safety since she keeps receiving threatening letters. Everyone seems to be concealing something as the investigation goes on, even Anna’s friends and relatives. Who is observing Ella and why, and who is aware of Anna’s true identity?

What a wonderful, vivid novel. All kinds of events can be described by this author. Her use of lovely language when describing her floral arrangements, her expression of melancholy when speaking about intensely sad occasions, and the way she uses language to convey surprise. Such little words for such big feelings. Theresa Driscoll has a knack for keeping readers interested.
