Iron Gold by Pierce Brown

He goes by the names Slave King, Reaper, Father, Liberator, and Warlord. But, despite having a large army, crimson armour, and a heavy heart, he feels like a boy as he plummets toward the war-torn world. The conflict is in its eleventh year, and he is thirty-three years old.

Darrow was the revolution’s hero ten years ago because he thought it would free people from Society’s shackles. Yet the Rising has destroyed everything, bringing perpetual battle in place of freedom and peace. He must now take on one final desperate task, risking everything he has battled for. Darrow still has faith in his ability to save everyone, but can he also save himself?

Several people’s destinies also intersect with Darrow’s throughout the universes, altering his course forever:

A young Red girl escapes tragedy in her refugee camp and creates a new life for herself that she could never have dreamed of.

A grieving ex-soldier is compelled to take the galaxy’s most valuable item or risk losing his life.

And Lysander au Lune, the Sovereign’s exiled heir, journeys through space with his mentor Cassius, plagued by the passing of the world Darrow created and wondering what may emerge from its ruins.

The tale of Red Rising was the demise of one universe. Iron Gold tells the tale of how a brand-new one was made. See the beginning of a dramatic new narrative of tragedy and victory from masterly New York Times bestselling author Pierce Brown.

Ten years after Morning Star, Iron Gold is set. The actors from the original trilogy are all present, and it’s fascinating to see what parts they’ve chosen to take on in the new republic. The republic, which is still young, is waning; for the past ten years, it has been at war with the Ash Lord in an effort to unite and liberate the entire Core before the Outer Rims recover and prepare for a war of their own. Just before the shoot starts to go south, we return to this planet.

Iron Gold flips the script and contains four points of view, whereas the first three books are all from Darrow’s point of view, greatly expanding the breadth of the plot and the worldbuilding.

It’s fascinating to see Darrow struggle with the decisions he’s made and the person he’s turned into as a result of this never-ending conflict. Pierce Brown excels in provoking philosophical reflection and getting his characters to dig deep within.
Lyria, a Gamma Red from Mars who has been driven from the mines and is now hurting and enraged, provided the other points of view. The erstwhile heir to the kingdom, Lysander, travels with Cassius and gives us a glimpse of life in space. Last but not least is Effriam, a former resistance soldier from the Grey tribe who lost his husband at Morning Star and wandered out shortly after.
