Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconscious by Sigmund Freud

Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconscious was published in 1905.

Freud examines the origins of humour, particularly jokes. For those who are familiar with his prior works, his discovery that jokes relieve tension in the subconscious comes as no surprise. Freud uses the words of his predecessors in this work. He is very kind while discussing Theodor Lipps and other authors of humour books who came before him. But I would unquestionably assert that Freud is where the real analysis of Jewish humour starts, and he is still, in my opinion, its top analyst.

Freud, however, demonstrates that humour may also be a technique to speak the truth that would otherwise be impossible. And this is when the book truly astonishes me. It serves as an introduction to his work, Civilization and Its Discontents. He’s really stating that the more highly educated and civilized we get, the more we have to suppress the things that would normally make us happy and offer joy to children.
