Kolymsky Heights by Lionel Davidson

Heights of Kolymsky. The ideal location for a Russian research centre underground would be a Siberian permafrost wasteland submerged in a sea of unending nights. The scientists are not allowed to leave since it is a place that is so secret that it isn’t recognized by the government. However, one scientist is anxious to communicate with the outside world. He is so desperate that he sends a message across the wilderness to the West in an attempt to contact the only person alive who is capable of doing the impossible.

Kolymsky Heights is an outstanding thriller with an amazing climax that is fast-paced, thrilling, and features a highly unconventional hero.

This narrative immerses you in the thoughts of the lead character. Each step he takes to complete his purpose is detailed, but not to the point that it becomes tedious. The final section is astounding.

Lionel Davidson (1922–2009) was a mysterious author. Three Gold Dagger Awards, the top British honour for crime and spy writing, were his during the 1960s and 1970s. He then stopped speaking for 16 years. Until he was well enough to write this book, which was initially released in 1994, he had whatever ailment or issue was. Sadly, the cold war and the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 had long since passed, and his novel was mercilessly dismissed because it belonged to a subgenre that was no longer popular. It would have been a huge bestseller if it had been written 10 or 20 years ago. A fantastic piece of writing that ranks highly on my list of excellent books that were not bestsellers.

One of the coldest places on earth, Kolyma was the site of numerous concentration camps during the Stalinist era. The story takes place in eastern Siberia, whose indigenous population once moved over the Bering Sea to western Canada and Alaska. The protagonist of the book, Johnny Porter, is a Canadian Native Indian with a gift for language who discovers he can interact with people who speak the language of his distant ancestors. He receives a request for assistance from a security agency: the Soviets are engaging in an extremely dubious and dangerous activity in a super-secret laboratory located deep within Kolyma’s permafrost.
