Charles Burns is a true expert on the spooky. The cultural allusions are what really grab my attention as being noteworthy. The narrative is touching and intimate. It is simple to identify with the main character at various points and feel sympathy for him. The novel does have a few more intellectual and psychedelic elements, but not too many. The plot is straightforward, expertly paced, and deeply upsetting. The artwork is magnificent and vibrant.
