The protagonist of this romantic tale is Jean Valjean, who has just completed his prison term at the start of the story. Simply defined, he is one of the most morally upright, kind people in the entire course of the book. He dismantles social categorizations because, as a good criminal, he shows that even seemingly bad people may be nice despite their flaws. (Among many other things, “Les Misérables” is a liberal protest against the brutal treatment of prisoners, who are frequently treated with more humanity than so-called upstanding people.) Inspector Javert, who pursues Valjean with all of his might after first noticing him, is his archrival.
Fantine is an innocent young woman who has lost her social standing as a result of a single error. Fate will bring Valjean and Fantine together. Cosette, Fantine’s daughter, becomes Valjean’s reason for existing for the majority of the book as he flees from Javert. The young Marius, whose father perished fighting alongside Napoleon in the Battle of Waterloo, is the last character. He resides with his grandfather M. Gillenormand. His encounter with a stunning young woman alters the course of his life. These individuals’ lives are entangled with that of innkeeper Thénardier and his family. Cosette is “adopted” and used by him and his wife.
Eponine, their daughter, will demonstrate that evil does not inevitably breed evil, and Gavroche, their street-dwelling son, is one of the book’s most vivid characters. The musical “Les Misérables” has five sections. We follow Jean Valjean as he interacts with Cosette, Javert, and Fantine. After that, we discover more about Marius, who runs into Valjean and Cosette. The Paris Uprising of 1832, in which the characters find themselves taking part, is described in the novel’s conclusion.
