Lie to Her by Melinda Leigh

Sheriff Bree Taggert and criminal investigator Matt Flynn respond to the call when a digital marketer is found dead in his backyard with his hands bound and his face covered in plastic wrap. The man’s dating-app profile and the word “liar” etched into his forehead are the main subjects of their research. The murderer makes another attack a day later.

Both victims are participants in the online dating world. They leave a trail of hurt and irate women in their wake. Bree and Matt, though, aren’t persuaded that the reason is as straightforward as it seems. Everyone they speak with appears to be hiding something or lying.
The killer’s fury intensifies as the number of suspects increases, and he leaves Bree a direct and fatal message. They must move quickly. Because the next victim is someone Bree cares about.

Bree and Matt’s perspectives predominated the narrative, with a few chapters from the murderer (which I loved). The excellent characters in this series, as always, complemented a compelling plot. Once more, Bree and Matt stood out both as individuals and as a pair in a professional and personal relationship. Bree is still being developed by the author as a memorable character for me. She is likeable and realistic due to her strength of character as the Sheriff, which she uses to juggle political nonsense for the greater good while still trying to retain some kind of normalcy for her family.

Nearly a year has passed after her sister’s passing when this Bree Taggert novel takes place. Bree is comfortable in her dual roles as sheriff and the protector of her niece and nephew. Her connections to her brother, Matt, and her town have all grown. Because there was so much going on and the case was rather difficult, any of the lying suspects may have been the murderer. Matt and Bree can clearly see that the situation has escalated as one suffocated man becomes two. The book becomes quite dramatic once the killer is exposed as Bree and Matt continue their investigation.

Bree is pursuing a different serial murderer, and because she is getting too near, the killer turns his or her attention to Bree and the people she cares about. However, we are all aware of how resilient Bree is. She may get a little frayed around the edges, but Matt helps her maintain her focus and recenter before she fully unravels. She and Matt are resolute and dedicated. The line between love and hate is extremely thin in this dark and twisted tale of rage and retaliation.
