Love All the People by Bill Hicks

Bill Hicks’ controversial stand-up routines, journals, notebooks, and letters are collected in Love All the People, which charts his progression from masterful conventional stand-up to something far more intriguing and perilous: a comic speaking without fear. As a result, a radical philosopher disguising himself as a comic probe the American mind and draws provocative (and amusing) conclusions. Hicks, who passed away in 1993 from cancer, didn’t go the simple route with his humour. He criticized the fabrications that were used to justify the atrocities committed during the Gulf War, the absurd ability of the mainstream media to mislead and pervert, and the humiliating cynicism of the marketing scene.

This enlarged edition of Love All the People, which includes extra routines and other essays, captures the rebellious comic creativity that made Bill Hicks an outspoken social commentator and celebrates it. He had a great sense of humour. Even though he was only somewhat well-known in the US at the time of his death, he has since gained notoriety and has always been more well-known in the UK, where people still regard him as one of the greatest comedians to have ever lived. He produced a tremendous deal of incisive political humour and satire against the war, America, and consumerism.

This is a fantastic book for anyone who wishes to remember Bill Hicks or is learning about him for the first time. The stand-up transcripts have some overlap, but most comics do this to condense their material, and the funny parts still work the second time around. The interview transcripts gave readers a clear picture of Bill away from the microphone; it was well worth the time to gain insight into the brilliant intellect of this man who departed the plane far too soon. He could have chosen to become a politician or a church crusader, but I’m pleased he applied his humour, comedy, one-liners, and anecdotes to politics and religion. What a revolutionary who utilized comedy and critique to show us the truth shows us the path.
