Nothing or anyone has ever been able to surprise him or be as enigmatically mysterious to him in his 108 years, and he’s never been in love. And keep in mind that vampires evolve gradually and permanently. As he was evolving and falling in love but was unable to recognize it for what it was, it was perplexing and inconsistent with his prior knowledge. Although 108 years old, he was still a teenager who had been trapped in time. By then, a typical person would be incredibly smart and mature.
He was and is without a doubt incredibly clever, and he has a solid understanding of how the typical human mind functions, but neither he nor Bella had any firsthand experience. He was now experiencing these intense emotions, one of which was his almost insatiable urge to drink her blood—his vampire instinct. Love is the other person’s human instinct. 2 irrational instincts at odds with one another. Both are attempting to win the other over. During the narrative, Bella exposes him, surprises him, encourages him to take chances, and causes him to reject who he truly is.
He is more drawn to her blood than any drug is to an addict, therefore it only makes sense that he will stalk her like a shark stalks its prey rather than like a human. In addition, even as he was falling for her, he had a tremendous instinct to protect her. And because their memories are so vivid but perfect, much like those of someone with PTSD, and because Tyler nearly killed her, Edward was concerned that something else might happen to her. He thus stood to watch. The other aspect of it is that he must safeguard his family and their secret. Normally, he would merely listen to what people were saying and respond accordingly, but in Bella’s situation, he was unable to do that.
So, slipping into her room to listen to her chat as she slept was another way he was keeping an eye on things and guarding his family. Keeping their secret was highly crucial to their existence, if it was uncovered, the Volturi would kill them all. He could see Bella cared about him and his family. Yet because he couldn’t access her mind, he made the effort to get to know her so he could judge her potential threat. And because he was focusing so intently on her, she took on the role of his entire world and dominated his thoughts and reasoning. Additionally, he believed that he was a soulless vial monster destined for damnation.
He subconsciously viewed assisting Bella and protecting her as a type of penance and a method to atone for at least some of his previous wrongdoings. He had already tasted human blood and had killed killers. He therefore believed himself to be a murderer. Emotionally traumatized by those memories and conscious of his capacity for murder, he was tormented by his inability to keep his distance from Bella and protect her from his possible threat.
