Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
Kvothe is my name. Princesses have been taken from snoozing barrow kings and returned. The town of Trebon was destroyed by me. I stayed the night with Felurian, and I came out of it with both my life and my sanity. I was kicked out of the university earlier than most individuals are permitted. I walk on paths at night that people are afraid to mention during the day. I’ve had conversations with gods, fallen in love, and created songs that make minstrels cry. Maybe you’ve heard of me.

The story of a hero recounted in his own voice is unique in fantasy literature, and it begins with that. It is a story of suffering, surviving, and how one man’s quest for meaning in the universe—and the unwavering resolve that fueled it—gave rise to a legend.
It is incredibly satisfying to watch a hero in The Name of the Wind go up against the rest of the world with nothing but his wits and a sword. In these circumstances, “suspension of disbelief” frequently takes the form of a “conviction that the hero will be good at everything and would emerge unscathed in the end.” However, even though they are impractical, I believe that reading about heroes who have superhuman abilities in certain ways can inspire me to be better in my everyday life. In this first book in the Kingkiller Chronicles, Patrick Rothfuss excels in all of these areas.
Whether Kvothe is murdering a draccus, trying his hand in the Eolian, or striving to obtain Master Elodin’s tutelage, his experiences are captivating. Kvothe’s pursuit of Denna, though, was one of the novel’s greatest overarching themes that I didn’t particularly enjoy. Denna is a complex human being. She has a lot to live up to as Kvothe’s main love interest in a novel where it is implied on every other page that he is The Best At Everything. She does, in some ways, match up to his counterpart. She is an amazing singer with unparalleled natural talent, full of tenacity in a competitive world, adventurous in heart, and unbelievably beautiful.
