Along with these individual adventures, ships begin to vanish as they pass through the ring, the final proto molecule is taken, Earth is devastated by terrorism, and each crew member must find a way to return home. After the events detailed in CIBOLA BURN, the Rocinante has returned to the Solar System and is in desperate need of repair. The crew, consisting of Holden, Alex, Amos, and Naomi, leave Tycho Station, where the Rocinante is moored and undergoing repairs, to attend to personal matters because it will be a few weeks before the ship is fit for action once more.
As a result, the protagonists are separated for the first time in the series when the crisis arises while they are travelling. Alex returns to Mars to finish off some business with family members, Amos makes a surprise trip back to Earth to accomplish a similar goal, Naomi travels to deal with her startling history, and Holden is requested to assist in the investigation of suspicious ship disappearances. Inside the Solar System’s structure, there is a lot of instability. Many worlds throughout the galaxy outside of the Solar System are now accessible to settlers thanks to the gate that the protomolecule, or whoever or constructed the protomolecule, left for humanity.
The political stability of the Solar System, which has always been precarious due to the inner planets, the Outer Planetary Alliance, and the belters, is deteriorating as a result of the mass exodus of the population. Following the assault on Callisto, the Solar System is rocked by one of the most magnificent and daring assaults on Earth that we have ever witnessed. The central theme of this novel is how our four major characters, individually and eventually collectively, deal with that chaos while also dealing with their individual personal difficulties.
