Nona the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir

Her town is under attack. The undead is returning. Nona only desires a birthday party. Nona has several traits with other people. She resides with her family, works at the neighbourhood school, enjoys beach walks, and meets new pets. Nona, though, is unlike most individuals. She awoke in a stranger’s body six months ago, and she worries that she might have to return it.

The entire city is disintegrating. The world is about to be destroyed by an enormous blue sphere that is hanging there. The final Cohort facility is encircled by Blood of Eden forces, who are waiting for the Emperor Undying to arrive.

Nona is a young person who cannot recall anything from six months ago. At the conclusion of Harrow, we met a handful of her pals with whom she shares a home. She volunteers at a school, largely taking care of a six-legged dog named Noodles and hanging out with some of the pupils who are younger than her in age but more mature intellectually. Nona’s age is evident in numerous ways, including the fact that she can only recall the past six months of her life. As a result, she lacks the depth of experience that someone her age would have. Therefore, from the standpoint of human growth, it made sense to me when she makes poor decisions (and, oh, she makes plenty of those). She is, at best, still just a child with a little bit more control over her bodily functions.

The tone of the book changes about halfway to two-thirds of the way through, as it does with the majority of Muir’s writings, it appears. When things reach a breaking point where they can no longer live “normally,” Nona and her housemates must deal with the potentially planetary-ending threat that is at their door. The opening is extremely slice-of-life, following Nona and her housemates through their usual lives. After that, events begin to take off and gradually spiral into a very weird situation at the book’s end, much like the endings to the preceding volumes.

Gideon was a crude fighter. A deranged necromancer, Harrow was. While living in a body belonging to a 19-year-old, Nona is a youngster. Six months ago, she awoke in a different person’s body. She could hardly get herself dressed when she woke up. She has made progress since then. She now regularly attends the school where she serves as a teacher’s assistant. She resides in a war-torn city where everything is disintegrating alongside Pyrrha, Camilla, and Palamedes. She possesses special talents—superpowers if you will.
