Notes from the Underground, and The Gambler by Fyodor Dostoevsky

A distraught woman seeks out the Man from the Underground for moral support. She is a destitute mother forced into prostitution in order to provide for her children. In addition to being one of the darkest and most perplexing books ever written, it is unquestionably one of Dostoevsky’s best works. The “hero” of the Notes is a miserable man with a terrible personality who has given up on all hope. He has cut himself off from society and the public eye, living instead in his own private “underground,” where he dwells in the vain hope that he would escape the harsh moral and natural rules. He leads an uprising against reason, against the “awful two plus two is four,” as he puts it.

It won’t be at all enjoyable if you agree to take a tour of his “underground”! It’s a depressing place with no reason, love, or even any hope. It’s a location where the ordinary world stops and something other, something a lot like hell, starts. Be ready to wrestle with the deepest philosophical issues like the purpose of existence, logic, and the validity of common sense if you plan on exploring the underworld. No one is getting a tour of it. You need to be capable, intelligent and have a strong philosophical and religious foundation. However, if you’re willing to go on the journey, you’ll have one of the most exciting intellectual experiences of all time.
