A moving and evocative crime thriller that is set against the JFK assassination and concentrates on a frantic cat-and-mouse chase throughout 1960s America is written by The Long and Faraway Gone author, who won the Edgar Award for his work on this book.

Finally, Frank Guidry’s good fortune has run out.

Guidry fears he will be the next victim after learning that everyone connected to Marcello has been found dead within hours after JFK was assassinated. Guidry was in Dallas less than two weeks before the president’s death running an errand for the boss. With few viable options, Guidry drives to Las Vegas to visit an old friend—a violent man who despises Marcello enough to assist Guidry in disappearing.

Guidry is aware that the first rule of fleeing is “don’t stop,” but when he spots a stunning housewife by the side of the road with two young girls, a dog, and a broken-down car, he sees the ideal cover for the hit men hot on his trail.

Guidry promises to assist Charlotte in getting to her destination of California while posing as an insurance agent. He can assist her in getting a new car if she travels with him to Vegas.

It’s more than just a car to her; it’s an escape. She is also escaping her oppressive life in a little town in Oklahoma and her nice husband, a hopeless alcoholic.

It’s a classic American tale: two strangers cross paths to share the open road west, a dream, and hope—and discover one another en route.

Guidry learns that she is intelligent and witty, while Charlotte observes that he is powerful and caring. He finds out that she is determined to start over with her children and herself; she cannot be aware of his desperation to leave his old life behind.

Another guideline is that fugitives shouldn’t fall in love, particularly not with one another. Roads are more like trails than they are just plain old roads, and Guidry’s vicious and relentless hunters are closing in on him. Guidry now aspires to truly live, perhaps for the first time, rather than merely get by.

Everyone is disposable, or they should be, but Guidry is suddenly powerless to discard the lady he has grown to love.

And it could result in their deaths.
